Origin and history

The Episcopal Palace of Troyes, built between the 16th and 17th centuries with subsequent modifications in the 19th century, is an emblematic monument of the city. It incorporates Gallo-Roman remains, including supporting columns and walls, in its foundations, reflecting its deep historical anchor. Its architecture blends a typical 16th-century Champagne checker and elements like an exterior staircase, a garden lined with walls and an arch entrance. Ranked Historic Monument in 1909 for its two wings and its sloping door, it dominates Saint Peter's Square, close to the cathedral.

The palace was transformed in 1982 into a museum of modern art of Troyes, following the donation in 1976 of Pierre and Denise Lévy, local textile manufacturers. Inaugurated by President François Mitterrand, the museum presents a complete panorama of French art from the second half of the 19th century to the 1960s, with major works by Courbet, Gauguin, Derain, Modigliani or Picasso. After a closure for work, he reopened in April 2024, highlighting his collections of paintings, sculptures, glassware Art Deco by Maurice Marinot and art premier.

The museum's collections revolve around key artistic movements: Impressionism (Millet, Degas, Seurat), Fauvism (Derain, Vlaminck, Dufy), Cubism (Braque, Gris, Metzinger) and School of Paris (Soutine, Modigliani). The sculpture is represented by bronzes by Rodin, Maillol, Zadkine or Picasso, while a room is dedicated to Maurice Marinot, glass artist and local painter. The building also preserves traces of its episcopal past, with classified architectural elements and a spatial organization reflecting its historical role in the city.

The Episcopal Palace thus illustrates the transition between a place of religious power and a major cultural space. Its recent history, marked by private donations and a museum vocation, makes it a symbol of the preservation of the troyan heritage. The Gallo-Roman excavations and remains integrated into its structure also recall Troyes' historical stratification, from ancient origins to its contemporary artistic influence.
