Origin and history

The Ideal Palace, also called the Ideal Palace of the Horse Factor, is an emblematic monument of naive art, built in Hauterives (Drôme) by Ferdinand Cheval, rural factor, between 1879 and 1912. This self-taught masterpiece, measuring 12 metres high and 26 metres long, is an eclectic blend of architectural styles inspired by the Bible, Hindu and Egyptian mythology. Horse, having stumbled on a stone in 1879, decided to collect stones during his postal tours to build this palace, using lime, mortar and cement, a precursor of reinforced concrete.

The building spans 33 years, with a first phase dedicated to the facade is, including organic elements such as caves and waterfalls, and a second, more structured phase, with temples and monumental sculptures. Horse works at night, in the light of an oil lamp, and is first considered an eccentric. The palace was classified as a Historic Monument in 1969 thanks to the support of André Malraux, despite the initial criticisms of the work of "favourful gathering of insanities".

Ferdinand Cheval, born in 1836, is a self-taught factor whose inspiration comes from postcards, then growing. He also built his grave at the cemetery of Hauterives, the Tomb of silence and endless rest, as well as Villa Alicius, both classified. His work draws the attention of artists like Pablo Picasso, André Breton and Max Ernst, who see it as a unique expression of popular creativity. In 2020, the palace was elected second preferred monument of the French.

The palace is now owned by the commune of Hauterives since 1994, after being managed by the granddaughters of Cheval. It attracts around 150,000-180,000 visitors a year and hosts cultural events such as concerts and exhibitions. In 2022, artist Jean-Michel Othoniel added a glass fountain, modernizing the work while respecting its dreamlike spirit.

The architecture of the palace is divided into four distinct facades: the east, organic and vegetal; West, structured with architectural miniatures; the north, populated by carved animals; and the south, a tribute to ancient times. Cheval also has more than 150 poetic or philosophical inscriptions, reflecting his world view and creative process. The ensemble, including the villa and the tomb, illustrates an extraordinary artistic quest, born of the will of one man.
