Origin and history
The bakery-pastry on Rue Lamarck, located in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, was designed and decorated in the early 20th century by the Benoist and Sons workshop. This historic monument is distinguished by its formwork wood front, which extends over three facades. Four canvases fixed under glass, depicting scenes of sowing, harvesting and landscapes with mills, adorn the exterior. Inside, other glass paintings, still preserved, bear witness to the craft of the time. Today, the site houses a service company, but its original decor, protected since 1984, remains intact.
The Benoist and Son (or Benoist and Son) workshop, the master of this project, designed a decorative set characteristic of Parisian shops of the early twentieth century. The front and interior decoration were inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of May 23, 1984, recognizing their heritage value. The official address, 128 rue Lamarck, is listed in the Merimée base, although GPS coordinates suggest a nearby location at 31 rue Eugène Carrière. This shift explains the accuracy considered "passable" (note 5/10) of its geographical location.
This type of bakery illustrates the importance of mouth shops in the Paris of the 1900s, where handicrafts and the aesthetics of fronts played a key role in the attractiveness of popular neighbourhoods. Glass paintings, typical of the period, served both as decoration and advertising material, featuring rural scenes idealized to evoke the quality of the products. Although the place is no longer dedicated to the bakery, its classification makes it a valuable testimony of this artisanal and commercial heritage.
