Origin and history

Paray Castle, located in Bessay-sur-Allier in the Allier, is a monument of the 2nd quarter of the 17th century, although some sources evoke an origin at the end of the 16th century. It is distinguished by its architecture in red and blue polychrome bricks, with a main building body flanked by square and round towers, remains of an ancient medieval dungeon. The northern facade reproduces that of the entrance, adorned with pilasters, metopes and warrior figures, while the interior preserves monumental chimneys and 17th century murals, such as landscape and landscape.

The castle has been linked to the family of Estutt de Tracy since 1640, by the marriage of Edmée de la Platière with François of Estutt. Among his illustrious members, Antoine Desputt de Tracy (1754–36), philosopher of "ideologists", senator and academician, lived there. His son, Victor d'Estutt (1781–64), MP and Minister of the Navy, modernized the estate. A chapel was added in 1719 for the marriage of Joseph d'Estutt with Charlotte Marion de Druy. After a fire in 1968, the Marquis Claude de Tracy rebuilt the castle, restoring its original proportions.

Ranked as a Historic Monument in 1981 (façades, roofs, fireplaces and paintings), the castle illustrates the architecture of Bourbonese gentilhommières, with an inner courtyard lined with commons and typical 17th century sculpted details. A literary anecdote combines the place with Georges Simenon, who fictively placed there the birth of Commissioner Maigret, inspired by the memories of the paternal director. The estate remains today owned by Tracy's family.
