Origin and history
The Saint-Arbogast church, located on Rue des Mérovingiens in the Montagne Verte district of Strasbourg, was built in 1910. Its originality lies in its light wooden panels structure, designed to be easily demolished in case of military necessity. It was on the glacis of the rampart of Strasbourg, an area cleared for defence, where only light constructions were allowed. In 1914, during the French offensive in the valley of the Bruche, the church was almost razed, but it was spared thanks to the stop of the French advance by the Fort de Mutzig. It was listed as historical monuments in 2022.
The church, in Rhine-speaking regionalist style, presents a modest architecture evoking a village church, with a low bell tower, a nave in the shape of a Latin cross and a boat frame. Its geometric stained glass windows recall art deco, and its liturgical furniture, including the altar and tabernacle, is inspired by the neo-Carolingian style. In the vicinity, the parish foyer, with its wooden panels, serves as both a place of worship, a cultural and a sports hall. The set reflects an adaptation to the urban and military constraints of the time, while integrating traditional architectural elements.
Designed by German architect Joseph Beck, St.Arbogast's church is distinguished by its exterior porch, skylights and roof. Its organ, installed in 1916 and made by Roethinger, as well as its three balconies in the gallery, add to its unique character. The building rests on a concrete base visible in its cellar, illustrating a mixture of modern and traditional techniques. The parish complex, including the church and the home, was protected in 2022 for its historical and heritage interest.
