Origin and history
The Square Pavilion is a historic monument located on Grollier Street in La Flèche, Sarthe department. Built at the end of the 15th century, it is distinguished by its staircase tower covered with a roof in the pavilion, flanked by a conical turret with a second access screw. The building, composed of two bodies before and after, underwent renovations in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, especially in the bays decorated with ironwork guardrails.
The stair tower, dating from the last quarter of the 15th century, is the oldest part of the building. The anterior body, with its basement, its square floor and its attic floor, is fitted in coated bellow with cut limestone angle chains. The roofs of both bodies are covered with gables, while the overhang turret adds architectural singularity to the whole.
Ranked a historic monument since December 9, 1926, the Square Pavilion illustrates the architectural evolution of the Pays de la Loire region. Its facades and roofs, protected by this decree, bear witness to the successive transformations, from the changes of modern times to the restoration of the twentieth century. The building remains a representative example of local heritage, mixing medieval elements and subsequent adaptations.
