Origin and history

The Palais du Roi de Rome, located in Rambouillet, was built between 1809 and 1815 by architect Auguste Famin on the orders of Napoleon I. He replaced the Hôtel du Gouvernement, built in 1787 by Jacques-Jean Thévenin for Louis XVI, whose lower wings bordering the courtyard he retained. This building is inspired by the Tuscan style of Quattrocento, marking an architectural transition between the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Pavillon du Verger, originally detached from the park of Rambouillet Castle, dates from the first half of the 18th century and was raised in the 19th century. The original hotel, built in 1784 on the site of a former menagerie by Thévenin, was intended for the governor of Rambouillet, the Count of Angiviller. Famin rebuilt the palace in 1813 on the same plane, before it was partially demolished and fragmented in 1834.

The columns of the current facades would come from the original vestibule. In 1838, the low wings were extended to the street. Today, the building is part of the National Estate of Rambouillet Castle, classified as Historic Monuments by decree in 2024. It thus blends royal and imperial heritage in a preserved architectural ensemble.
