Origin and history
Payré Castle is a historic monument located in La Peyratte, in the Deux-Sèvres department (New Aquitaine). Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it illustrates the transition between medieval defensive architecture and early Renaissance influences. Its polygonal plan, surrounded by agricultural buildings, and its two round towers of angle testify to its fortified character. The facade on the courtyard, pierced by a central door with a mulched pediment, reflects an aesthetic research specific to the late Middle Ages.
The chapel, joined to the house body, dates from the 14th century and retains a moulded frame as well as partially erased wall paintings. These frescoes, representing perhaps apostles or the martyrdom of St Sebastian, underline the religious importance of the site. The castle was partially protected as historical monuments: inscription of facades and roofs in 1986, then classification of the chapel (paintings and frame) in 1990.
Integrated into a typical seigneurial ensemble of Poitou, the Château de Payré embodies the dual role of these buildings at the end of the Middle Ages: place of military power and centre of religious and social life. Its state of conservation and decorative elements make it a remarkable example of the castral heritage of the region.
