Origin and history

The Petipas de Walle Hotel is a private hotel located at 122 rue de l'Hôpital-Militaire in Lille, in the Nord department (Hauts-de-France). Built between 1778 and 1779 by the Lille architect Michel-Joseph Lequeux, it marks the arrival of the French neoclassical style in the region. Its architecture is distinguished by a central courtyard preceded by a triumphal arched portal flanked by two pavilions, as well as a facade adorned with columns and many superimposed, creating a set of characteristic reliefs.

The hotel housed several prominent personalities, including Louis-Dominique-Joseph de Lencquesaing (1768–54) and his wife Queen-Ferdinande-Eugènie, then their son Louis-Dominique-Arthur de Lencquesaing (1809–87) and his wife Mélanie-Joseph-Marie Van der Cruisse de Waziers (1816–1906). After 1906, notary Georges Herlin became its owner. The building has been listed as a historic monument since 10 February 1948 (for the whole, except for classified parts), and was classified for its facades and roofs on 2 November 1979.

A witness of the Lille social evolution, the hotel reflects the prestige of the bourgeois families of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its state of conservation and its successive protections underline its heritage importance. Today owned by a private company, there remains an emblematic example of the civil architecture of the region, accessible via the metro station Rihour.

The archives of the Château de Laprée (linked to the Lencquesaing family) and the Mérimée base complete the documentary sources on this monument. Its location, recorded with average accuracy (5/10), is confirmed by the official address and GPS coordinates. The facades, with their superimposed portals and columns of varying diameters, illustrate the architectural know-how of the period.
