Ancient Fragments in the Entrance Gate: List by 1846

Origin and history

The Petit Séminaire de Belley is a former Catholic religious establishment located on Rue Sainte-Marie in the commune of Belley (département de l'Ain, region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Founded to train future priests, it illustrates the importance of the Church in education and local life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its entrance porch, incorporating ancient elements, bears witness to a remarkable architectural reuse, typical of the religious constructions of this period.

In 1840, the ancient fragments of the entrance porch were officially classified as historic monuments, recognizing their heritage value. This early protection underscores the early interest in preserving old remains, even in more recent buildings. The seminar, disused of its original function, was converted in 2015 into a hotel under the name Maison Saint Anthelme, illustrating a contemporary trend of rehabilitation of religious heritage.

The location of the seminar, at 41 rue Sainte-Marie, is specified in official databases such as Mérimée. These sources also confirm that the building belongs to the municipality of Belley, whose Insee code (01034) attaches the monument to the territory of Ain. The building, although partially protected, remains a symbol of the educational and religious past of the Bugey region, now enhanced by its tourist use.
