Origin and history
The Bourdonnais pharmacy, located at 54 avenue de la Bourdonnais in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, is a remarkable example of early 20th century commercial architecture. Installed around 1900, it embodies Art Nouveau aesthetics and the technical innovations of the era, notably through its front with painted canvases fixed under glass, a process that was then innovative for the signs.
The interior decoration of the pharmacy is just as remarkable, with carved woodwork depicting poppy flowers, a traditional symbol of the pharmacy. These elements, both functional and artistic, illustrate the importance attached to the beautification of public and commercial spaces in Paris at the turn of the century. The pharmacy was partially protected by an order of 23 May 1984, which listed its front and interior decoration as Historic Monuments.
This monument reflects the evolution of pharmaceutical and commercial practices in the French capital, where the alliance between science, art and crafts was valued. Its location in the 7th arrondissement, a neighbourhood in the midst of urban transformation, also underlines its role in the daily life of the Parisians of the time. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, with an address confirmed by Merimée bases and consistent GPS coordinates.
