Origin and history

The Avize sandstone fountain is an emblematic monument located in the viticulture school of this commune of the Great East. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 19th century, it illustrates the importance of water and local stone in the utility architecture of the time. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of November 10, 1961 underlines its heritage value and its link with regional wine history.

At the end of the 19th century, Avize, located in Champagne, was an active centre for wine production, where infrastructures such as specialized schools and fountains played a key role in daily and economic life. The sandstone fountains, a typical material of the region, were used both for water supply and for the beautification of public or educational spaces. Their presence in a winery school reflects the alliance between craftsmanship and technical education.

The location of the fountain, at 61 Impasse Jean Lerouge, is documented with an accuracy considered fair (level 5/10). His identified author, A. Bigot, as master of work, remains the only historical character explicitly associated with his creation. The lack of additional details on its use or iconography limits the understanding of its precise role within the school, but its ranking in 1961 attests to its recognized heritage importance.
