Pierre à cupules so-called Pierre-du-Carreau : classification by decree of 11 March 1911

Origin and history

The Pierre-du-Carreau is an adorned rock in the commune of Sciez, Haute-Savoie. This monument, whose exact period remains undetermined, has been classified as historical monuments since 1911. His interest lies mainly in his cupulas, artificial cavities dug in stone, whose meaning and use remain subject to archaeological interpretation.

Sciez, like other communes in Haute-Savoie, is home to a prehistoric and protohistoric heritage marked by megalithic or engraved remains. Cupstones, common in alpine regions, could be linked to ritual, astronomical or symbolic practices of ancient societies. Their presence illustrates the human occupation and beliefs of local populations in a remote era, although there is a lack of written sources to clarify the details.
