Cree stone of the old church, in the cemetery: classification by decree of 8 July 1926
Origin and history
La pierre de criée de Saint-Maixent-sur-Vie is a historic monument located in the cemetery of this commune in the Vendée department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Ranked by ministerial decree on 8 July 1926, it is one of the few preserved remains of the former local church, now extinct. Its current location within the funeral enclosure suggests its past role in the religious and community life of the village.
Cree stones, architectural elements often associated with medieval or modern churches, traditionally served as a medium for public announcements, religious proclamations or calls to the population. In the Salesian context, these monuments reflect the social and spiritual organization of rural parishes, where the church occupied a central place. Although the local archives do not specify the exact time of its creation, its classification as Historic Monuments underlines its heritage and symbolic importance for the municipality of Saint-Maixent-sur-Vie.
