Origin and history
The pierced stone of Traves is the vestige of a dolmen monolith, located in the commune of Traves, in the department of Haute-Saône. This megalithic monument is located at the highest point of a plateau overlooking the left bank of the Saône, 250 metres above sea level. The slab-hublot, slightly trapezoidal, is 2.05 meters wide at the base, 1.25 meters high and about 20 centimetres thick. It once separated the anteroom from the funeral chamber, with a central oval hole allowing the passage of the deceased.
The stone was first mentioned in 1866 and was classified as historical monuments on 7 September 1911. Its top and faces have been snuffed, and lithic objects (stones, flints) have been found in the vicinity. A similar stone, with similar characteristics, exists in Aroz, a few kilometers from Traves.
This dolmen is part of the megalithic collective burials of Franche-Comté, studied in particular in the archaeological works of Pierre Petrequin and Jean-François Piningre. These funeral monuments testify to the ritual and social practices of the Neolithic communities of the region, although the precise dating of this site is not explicitly mentioned in the available sources.
