Origin and history
The dovecote of the Château d'Autrecourt-sur-Aire is a building dating from the 1st quarter of the 18th century, located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Meuse (55). This monument, which has been on the inventory of Historical Monuments since 1991, bears witness to the rural and seigneurial architecture of the modern era. Its ground floor still houses the remains of an oven, a rare and characteristic element of the pigeons of this period.
The location of the dovecote, at the 3 Grand-Rue in Autrecourt-sur-Aire, is estimated with a priori satisfactory accuracy (level 6/10). This type of construction, often associated with a castle or seigneurial farm, served both as a symbol of prestige for landowners and as a food reserve through pigeon breeding. Pigeons were also social markers, their size and ornamentation reflecting the status of their sponsor.
The inscription of the dovecote by order of 16 July 1991 concerns specifically the building designated under cadastre AD 109. No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, rentals, or accommodation). The sources mention only its protected status and approximate location, without details of its contemporary use or precise conservation status.
