Origin and history

The Pigeonier du Salin is a 17th century dovecoier located in Saint-Pardon-de-Conques, Gironde, along the Garonne River. This monument was part of the warehouses of the local salt port and was not attached to the castle of the Jaubertes. Its trapue silhouette, with a circular base and a slightly inclined wall, is characteristic of the utility buildings of the era. A first defensive cornice surrounds the building, while a second, molded, supports a pierced dome of four semicircular pediments.

The building keeps inside traces of its original use, such as bolts (pigeon nests) and a central beam supporting the pivot. Ancient documents attest to a restoration during the reign of Louis XIV, confirming its importance in the local economic landscape. The dovecote was listed as historic monuments by order of 4 August 1978, thereby recognizing its heritage value.

The site is located to the north of the village, near the vicinal road linking Saint-Pierre-de-Mons to Saint-Loubert. Its architecture, both functional and defensive, reflects its role in the salt production and storage system, a major activity on the banks of the Garonne at this time. The extrados cupola and the Cardinal lucarns add an aesthetic dimension to this utilitarian monument, witness to the rural and artisanal history of the region.
