Origin and history
The Pigeonier de Malintrat is an emblematic building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its wood-pan structure on stilts, a rare technique in the region. At that time, pigeons were usually built directly on the ground, making this monument particularly atypical.
The dovecote adopts a parallelepipedic shape, with a pavilion roof surmounted by a four-sided lantern, itself bent with a spear. Its walls, supported by wooden crumbs, illustrate local construction techniques. The transition between the stilts and the building is made by four straight or bent pods, reinforcing its architectural singularity.
Ranked a historic monument by decree of August 28, 1974, this dovecote bears witness to the importance of dovecotes in the rural economy of the time. These buildings, often reserved for lords or landowners, were used to raise pigeons for their meat, eggs and manure, a valuable resource for crops. In Auvergne, where pigeons on stilts are rare, Malintrat offers a remarkable example of this agricultural and architectural heritage.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected element and highlight its heritage value. Although its exact address is specified (5001 Domaine du Clos, 63510 Malintrat), little information is provided on its accessibility or current use, suggesting that it could be private or not very open to the public.
