Origin and history
The Planetarium de Saint-Étienne is a cultural and scientific equipment installed in the Fauriel space on the former industrial site of Manufrance. Opened in 1993, it is dedicated to the dissemination of astronomical knowledge through educational and playful sessions, combining scientific rigour and accessibility for all audiences. Its dome of 12 meters, which can accommodate up to 84 visitors, makes it a unique place to explore the universe.
Since 2003, the planetarium has been equipped with the RSA Cosmos In Space System astronomical simulator, supplemented in 2021 by 6 3D 4K Laser projectors. These technologies are used to recreate celestial phenomena (eclipses, polar aurora, black holes) or to travel virtually to exoplanets or nebulae. The system database includes more than 100,000 stars and hundreds of thousands of galaxies in 3D, providing total immersion.
In addition to its regular sessions, the Planetarium de Saint-Étienne has produced since 1993 specialized films for planetariums, distributed internationally (more than 250 licences sold). Some, like Polaris, have won prizes. The institution actively participates in national events (Science Festival, Night of Stars) and collaborates with local cultural actors (museums, universities, media libraries), strengthening its territorial and scientific anchor.
His commitment to scientific mediation also extends to one-off partnerships, such as the Fête du Livre de Saint-Étienne or the Nuit des Cherchers. These initiatives aim to democratize astronomy and create synergies between science, culture and education, while valuing Manufrance's rehabilitated industrial heritage.
