Origin and history
The priory of the Plessis-aux-Moines, located in Chouzé-sur-Loire, found its origins in the 11th century, when Lovo and his brother Rahier laid its foundations under the authority of Bourgueil Abbey. This priory, of a fortified nature, was girded with moat, one of which still remains to the east, crossed by a dormant bridge leading to a partially preserved door, pierced by murderers. These defensive elements testify to its strategic role and its adaptation to the tensions of the medieval era.
The prior's house, built or redesigned in the 15th century, features a door decorated with coats of arms today wooded, as well as two windows upstairs, one of which features a moulure frame decorated with anangelots. These architectural details reflect the importance of the prior and the care given to his residence. The chapel, located at the corner of the building, was converted into a shed, while in the south of the convent stands a medieval barn composed of three naves of five spans, illustrating the agricultural and economic activity of the priory.
Ranked a Historic Monument since 1963, the site specifically protects the eastern facade with its moat and bridge, the western facade of the prioral house, the facades of the chapel, as well as the barn. These protections highlight the heritage value of the remains, mixing defensive, religious and agricultural elements. The lack of details on its current use (visits, rentals) leaves a mystery about its contemporary vocation, although its state of conservation suggests an untapped tourist or cultural potential.
Available sources, including Monumentum, confirm its connection to Bourgueil Abbey and its architectural evolution, marked by defensive and residential additions. The location, specified by the code Insee 37074 (Indre-et-Loire), anchored in the region Centre-Val de Loire, strengthens its anchoring in a territory rich in monastic heritage. The GPS coordinates and approximate address (2 Le Plessis) complete the technical data, providing a basis for future exploration.
