Origin and history

Fish industry At l'Huîtrière, located at 3-7 rue des Chats-Bossus in Lille, is a historic monument registered since 2015 for its facade and interior decoration. Founded at the beginning of the 20th century, it embodies the Lille artisanal and gastronomic heritage, with uninterrupted activity from 1898 to 2015 under the same family. Its visual identity, marked by the Art Deco style, makes it a rare testimony of the commercial signs of the inter-war period.

The window façade, designed as a monumental advertising poster, was made in two stages by architect Trannoy: a first version in 1928, and an extension in 1940. Pierre Baillieul, who sponsored the works, collaborated with painter Mathurin Méheut to create an exceptional interior and exterior decor. This decoration, protected under the title of Historical Monuments, combines marine motifs, noble materials and geometric lines, characteristic of Art Deco.

The establishment, both fish and restaurant, played a central role in local life, reflecting the importance of food shops and halls in the industrial Lille. Its registration in 2015 highlights the heritage value of its today rare commercial architecture and its anchoring in the social and economic history of the Hauts-de-France region.
