Origin and history

The Poissy Town Hall, built between 1936 and 1937, is a notable example of 20th century public architecture in reinforced concrete. Originally designed by municipal architect Florent Nanquette, the project is taken over and finalized by Pierre Mathé (Rome Prize) and Henri Calsat, who modify the plans and supervise the construction. The building includes decorative elements signed by renowned artists, such as Ossip Zadkine for the facade and Théodore Brenson for an interior fresco dated 1937. Materials, such as stone for the base, glazed bricks from the courgettes and floors in parquet or mosaic, reflect particular attention to aesthetic and functional details.

The wedding hall, vaulted in the middle of the hangar with a cul-de-four apse, and the large hall illuminated by a zenithal lantern, illustrate the architectural ambition of the project. A wrought iron balustrade with wavy motifs adorns the staircase, while the festive hall, later decorated by Armand Aristide (1943-1945), and the wedding hall, embellished by Jean-Robert Pinet in 1947, complete this artistic ensemble. The building also includes a 1500-seat theatre, which can be converted into a ball or conference room, and opened in December 1937.

The town hall underwent subsequent changes, including an elevation of a third floor in 1945 by the Bourgois brothers and then in 1987 by the cabinet Jouve. The theatre was completely renovated between 1989 and 1990. Ranked Historic Monument in 1996 for its facades, lobby, staircase, wedding hall and council hall, the building reflects the evolution of municipal needs and the integration of art into public space in the 20th century.

The elements protected since 1996 underline the heritage value of the place, where technical innovation (concrete armed by Bollard company) and artistic creations (decors of Rousseau, stage development of Larby). The exact address, Place de la République in Poissy, and its Insee code (78498) anchor this building in the territory of the Yvelines, in the Île-de-France region, thus marking its central role in local life.
