Origin and history
The Polissoir de la Petite-Garenne, also known as the Polissoir de Villemartin, is a megalithic monument located in Morigny-Champigny, in the Essonne department (91). This site, dated from the Neolithic, is in the form of a slab of sandstone 2.75 m long and 1.30 m wide, outcropping the ground. It consists of four polishing grooves, two polished surfaces and sixteen oval bowls, used to sharpen or shape stone tools.
Ranked as historical monuments since 1902, this polisher bears witness to prehistoric craftsmanship. According to G. Courty's observations, a second polisher, with two grooves, existed nearby but disappeared after being found in the bed of June. This type of monument illustrates the importance of polishing sites in local neolithic societies, linked to the production of tools and the organization of territories.
Available sources, including Alain Bénard's work (Les megalithes de l'Essonne, 2012), highlight his role in the regional megalithic heritage. The polisher is now located at the approximate address of 16 Avenue du Polissoir, although the accuracy of this location is considered "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10).
