Polissoir dit des Fainants (cad. 1142) : classification by decree of 17 October 1938

Origin and history

The Polissoir des Fainants is a megalithic monument located in Noé, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This site, typical of prehistoric remains, has been classified as historical monuments since 1938. Its local name, "Les Fainants", evokes an oral tradition or popular interpretation, although its exact origin remains unknown in available sources.

Polishers were stone tools used to sharpen or polish objects, often related to the artisanal or ritual activities of Neolithic societies. In the Yonne region, as in other areas of France, these monuments illustrate the techniques and lifestyles of ancient populations. Their presence suggests an organized human occupation around local resources, such as stone or streams, essential for prehistoric communities.
