Bridge of Estroulhas: inscription by decree of 28 April 1964
Origin and history
The bridge of Estroulhas, also known as the bridge of Estrouillas, is a medieval roadwork located in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it was first mentioned in 1264. Its name could come from the expression "three lizards", evoking a toll that was previously collected. This bridge played a key role on the way to Santiago de Compostela, serving as the main access to Puy-en-Velay, a major pilgrimage site.
With a length of more than 200 metres and a width of 5 metres, the bridge has only two visible arches crossing the river, while the rest of its structure covers cultivated land, suggesting a larger old river bed. Two submerged arches were built into cellars. The arches, irregular and low, have a slight curvature with ancient harpsichords, except one, rebuilt in modern times. The northern extremity shows traces of old age prior to the Romanesque period, indicating an early construction, anterior to the Gothic building bridges.
The Estroulhas Bridge was listed as historical monuments on 28 April 1964. Its architecture and history reflect its strategic and commercial importance in the region, as well as its link to medieval pilgrimages. Today, there remains a remarkable testimony of medieval construction techniques and of the evolution of communication routes in Auvergne.
Although partially modified over the centuries, the bridge retains original evidence of its prolonged use and adaptation to local needs. Its listing among historic monuments highlights its heritage value, both for its historical role and for its unique architectural features.
