Origin and history

The bridge of La Guioule-sous-Rodez is a medieval building located in Rodez, Aveyron department, Occitanie region. Built in the early 14th century (circa 1320), it crossed the Aveyron River and was originally used to connect Rodez to Millau. Its architecture, supported by four piles, includes a central donkey back and reinforced forks, typical of the fortified bridges of the time. It is now taken by the GR 62 hiking trail.

This bridge, which has been listed as historic monuments since 17 June 1947, has defensive and practical features. The batteries are equipped with pedestrian shelters, and a series of stone terminals protect the parapet. Located in Layoule Park, it illustrates medieval road engineering, mixing civil utility and adaptation to relief.

Owned by the commune of Rodez, the bridge of La Guioule-sous-Rodez bears witness to the strategic importance of communication routes in the Middle Ages. Its construction met the needs of traffic between two major poles of the Rouergue, while integrating elements of protection against floods and conflicts. Today, there remains an emblematic vestige of the Aveyron heritage.
