Origin and history

The bridge of the Romans of Venarey-les-Laumes, located in the commune of Venarey-les-Laumes in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, dates from the 16th century. This monument, inscribed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments since February 12, 1925, is an architectural testimony of this period. It spans the Oze, a tributary of the Brenne, and is accompanied by a monumental cross of the same century, also protected.

The municipality of Venarey-les-Laumes, where this bridge is located, has had a history marked by its strategic and economic role. In the 19th century, its development was strongly influenced by the arrival of the railway and the construction of the Burgundy Canal. These infrastructures have transformed the city's character, notably with the creation of an important railway centre and a river port, although the latter had not experienced the expected rise in competition from other modes of transport.

The Roman Bridge, owned by the municipality, illustrates the medieval and modern heritage of Venarey-les-Laumes. Its inscription in historical monuments underscores its heritage importance, as does that of the adjacent cross. These elements, though modest in appearance, reflect the architectural and historical evolution of the region, marked by both local and wider influences, linked to the exchanges and conflicts that have crossed Burgundy over the centuries.

The region, rich in history, is also known for its proximity to Alise-Sainte-Reine, site of the famous Battle of Alésia in 52 BC. This broader historical context adds an additional dimension to the heritage importance of the Roman Bridge, which is part of a much wider temporal and cultural continuity.

Today, the Roman Bridge remains a symbol of local heritage, recalling the importance of communication routes and art works in the development of territories. Its state of conservation and its protection make it a key element of the historical landscape of Venarey-les-Laumes, attracting the attention of those passionate about history and architecture.
