Origin and history
The bridge of Perthuis-au-Loup is a medieval bridge located in Châtillon-sur-Seine, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. He crossed the big arm of the Seine to connect the city centre, including the Chaumont district, to an urban area that was developing between the two arms of the river. This bridge, built in the 14th century, is a testimony of civil architecture of this time, with its two arches in masonry.
The current bridge, although often associated with the 14th century, was actually rebuilt in 1713 to replace an old stone bridge, which was erected in 1658 at the site of a wooden bridge called Trou-au-Loup. The work of 1713 was awarded to Claude Bourdot, local master mason. Despite this reconstruction, the building has maintained an inscription in the title of the Historic Monuments since June 16, 1928, because of its heritage importance.
The bridge of Perthuis-au-Loup is now owned by the commune of Châtillon-sur-Seine. It is distinguished by its access with straight degrees at each end, facilitating its integration into the urban landscape. Its name evokes its topographic origin, linked to a narrow passage (perthuis) and to a former local appellation, the Trou-au-Loup.
