Bridge situated on the former salt road between Scherwiller and Thanvillé (see plan annexed to the decree) (Case A1) : inscription by decree of 18 November 1993

Origin and history

Bridge number 2 is a historic monument located in Scherwiller, in the department of Lower Rhine, in the Grand East region. Built around 1750, it is part of the works linked to the Sel Road, a major commercial axis linking the Alsatian cities. This bridge, characterized by an arch in the middle and parapets, illustrates the 18th century construction techniques. It was partially restored with concrete on the downstream side to ensure its sustainability.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 18 November 1993, Bridge No. 2 is owned by the municipality of Scherwiller. Its inscription specifically concerns the structure between Scherwiller and Thanvillé, as specified in the plan annexed to the protection order. This ranking underscores its heritage importance in the local and regional architectural landscape.

The Sel Road, of which this bridge was part, played a crucial economic role in Alsace in the 18th century. It allowed the transport of salt, an essential resource for food conservation and industrial activities at the time. Bridges like Scherwiller facilitated exchanges between villages and cities, thus contributing to the development of the territories crossed. Today, there remains a material testimony of this commercial and technical history.
