Origin and history
The Paul-Raymond Museum is the former municipal museum of Pont-Saint-Esprit, located in the Gard department, in the Occitanie region (formerly Languedoc-Roussillon). His name is Paul Raymond (1859-1944), a local physician and prehistorian, in tribute to his scientific contributions. This museum was dedicated to art, archaeology and regional history, hosting diverse collections ranging from prehistory to twentieth century.
Located in a historic building, the former Town Hall built between 1832 and 1833, the museum opened to the public in 1980. He hosted works of art, including works by Russian painter Benn (1905-1989), as well as archaeological pieces, ceramics and objects related to local history. After its closure in 2015, its collections were transferred to the Musée d'art sacré du Gard, also located in Pont-Saint-Esprit.
The museum was distinguished by its thematic diversity, covering both modern figurative art and medieval or prehistoric remains. Its role was both cultural and educational, providing a panorama of the artistic and historical heritage of the region. The closure in 2015 marked the end of its activity, but its legacy continues through collections held in other local institutions.
