Bridge on the river Le Cosson: inscription by order of 2 December 1946
Origin and history
The bridge over the Cosson, located in Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt (Loir-et-Cher), was built in 1770 in the third quarter of the 18th century. It was built as part of the construction of the direct road linking Blois to Romorantin, marking an improvement of local infrastructure under the Ancien Régime. The architecture consists of two piles and three arches, typical of the bridges of this time.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of December 2, 1946, this bridge illustrates civil engineering of the Enlightenment century. Its location, specified as "passable" (note 5/10), corresponds to address 27 Route Nationale, in the commune of Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt. Available data are mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum.
At the time of its construction, bridges played a key role in the economic and social development of the regions, facilitating trade and travel. In the Val de Loire, a historic transit area, these infrastructures supported river and land trade, essential to local life.
