Origin and history

The Old Bridge of Espalion, located in the department of Aveyron in Occitanie region, is a Gothic bridge built in the early thirteenth century. It crosses the Lot and is distinguished by its four arches, three in third-point, typical of medieval architecture. Its donkey-back structure and triangular forks, going up to the parapet, form safety spaces for pedestrians. Built in red sandstone, it was once fortified with three towers and drawbridges, reflecting its strategic role in defence and local trade, especially for the transport of salt to Aubrac.

The bridge is mentioned for the first time in a charter of 1060, linked to a donation of the lords of Calmont to the Abbey of Conques. This document attests to its existence from the 11th century, although its reconstruction in the 13th century is confirmed by its architectural style. The broken arches, characteristic of the 13th-XVIth centuries, and subsequent modifications (such as the widening of the pavement in 1730 or the reconstruction of an arch in 1724) illustrate its evolution. Ranked a historic monument in 1888 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, it also symbolizes the importance of Santiago de Compostela's roads.

Originally, the bridge was a toll, a source of income for the local lords and the Abbey of Conques. Its economic role was central, with Espalion sheltering the largest salt warehouse in Rouergue in the Middle Ages. Architectural changes, such as the demolition of towers and houses in the 17th-18th century, reflect changes in its use, from a defensive and commercial function to a purely pedestrian structure. The metallic cross erected in 1728 on one of the small ones recalls its anchoring in religious and local history.

The materials used, mainly red sandstone, and construction techniques (triangular fore-beeks, triple roller arches) highlight medieval know-how. Comparisons with other regional bridges, such as Entraygues-sur-Truyère and Estaing, allow it to date its construction more precisely before 1269. Today, the Pont Vieux remains an exceptional testimony of the engineering and economic life of the Rouergue in the Middle Ages, while being an emblematic place of pilgrimage to Compostela.

Future

The Pont Vieux d'Espalion is one of the 71 monuments and 7 portions of paths have been inscribed since 1998 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the official title of "Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France".

It is on the way to Via Podiensis, or "Voy du Puy", from Puy-en-Velay to the Basque village of Ostabat, where it joins via Turonensis and via Lemovicensis gathered shortly before.
