Bridge (public domain, not cadastre): registration by order of 24 April 1998

Origin and history

The Pont Vieux de Cailhavel, also known as Pont Saint-Jean, is one of the most remarkable bridges of the Rigole de la Plaine, a hydraulic structure linked to the Canal du Midi. Built in the 17th century, it is the only one, with the Riat bridge, to have retained its original state, thus offering an authentic testimony of the construction techniques of the era. Its architectural characteristics, such as the size of the stones or the retreat of the birth of the vault, suggest that it dates from the period of creation of the Canal.

The bridge has undergone very few modifications over the centuries, due to its low use. A drinking pot, attached to the right bank abutment, was recently redesigned, but the whole structure remains representative of the 17th century bridges. Its registration as a Historic Monument by decree of 24 April 1998 underlines its heritage importance, particularly for its exceptional state of conservation.

The location of the bridge, at Saint-Félix-Lauragais in Haute-Garonne, makes it a key part of the historical landscape of the Rigole de la Plaine. This type of bridge, often associated with hydraulic infrastructure, played an essential role in water management and local traffic, reflecting the ingenuity of modern-day builders.
