Origin and history

The Pont-Vieux de Ruffey-sur-Seille is a stone work built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, specifically in 1770. It replaces an old 16th-century bridge, which was considered old in 1768. Located in the centre of the village, it was once the only crossing point on the Seille before the construction of a new bridge. This monument, designed by architect Jean-Claude Aubert, is distinguished by its three arches: a central in basket handle and two sides in the middle of the corner. Its apron, slightly domed in the back of the donkey, and prow-shaped forks reinforce its architectural singularity.

The bridge is part of a historical context where road and river infrastructure played a key role in local trade. In Burgundy-Franche-Comté, in the 18th century, bridges were strategic elements for trade, agriculture and the displacement of rural populations. Their construction often reflected local masonry know-how, as evidenced by the techniques used here, combining functionality and aesthetics.

Ranked among the historical monuments since 17 July 2003, the Pont-Vieux illustrates the evolution of construction techniques under the Old Regime. Its heritage protection underlines its importance for both local history and the French architectural heritage. The batteries equipped with avant-becs, designed to withstand flooding, show an ingenious adaptation to the natural stresses of the Seille.

Today, the bridge remains a symbol of the heritage of Ruffey-sur-Seille, testifying to the ingenuity of the builders of the eighteenth century. Its location in the heart of the village and its state of conservation make it an accessible place of memory, while serving as a historic landmark for residents and visitors. The Creative Commons license associated with its images also promotes its dissemination and cultural value.
