Origin and history
The bridge over the Touch, also known as the Pont d'Ancely, is an arch building built between Blagnac and Toulouse, in the Haute-Garonne department. This road and rail bridge, built in the 18th century, supports the avenue des Arènes-Romanes and allows the passage of the tram lines of Toulouse. It is characterized by a unique red brick arch, decorated with coat of arms of the Languedoc states on each side.
The history of the bridge dates back to antiquity, where the place was already used as a passage, either by ford or by a primitive bridge. Between 1776 and 1781 the building was demolished and rebuilt under the direction of Joseph-Marie de Saget. This bridge, located between the Garonne and the Toulouse-Blagnac airport slopes, is a strategic crossing point, close to the future metro station Blagnac and the A621 motorway.
The bridge over the Touch was included in the inventory of historical monuments on April 11, 1950. Its architecture, marked by a unique brick arch and arms shields of Languedoc, makes it a notable example of the 18th century heritage in Occitanie. It also plays a modern role in supporting transport infrastructure, such as tramway and a major roadway.
