Four bridges (three of two arches and one of an arch) between National Road 19 and the site of the old castle; elevated roadway pierced by four arches, north of the site of the former castle (Box ZB, not cadastre, on the rural road number 4 of La Ferté): inscription by order of 3 December 1996
Origin and history
The castle of Jaillac, now extinct, was located in the municipality of Meriot, in the department of Aube. Of this building, four bridges and an elevated roadway remain, elements listed as historic monuments since 1996. These remains mark the historic access to the estate, with arches dating from the 17th century and bridges probably built in the 18th century to connect the national road to the castle.
The four bridges, three to two arches and one to one arch, are distinguished by their strictly private use, explaining the absence of parapets. The roadway, pierced by four arches, is located north of the site of the old castle. These structures, now owned by the commune, illustrate the utility architecture linked to the seigneurial estates of the modern era in Champagne.
The inscription under the title of historical monuments in 1996 refers specifically to these elements: bridges between the national road 19 and the site of the castle, as well as the elevated roadway. Although the castle itself has disappeared, these remains offer a material testimony of its spatial organization and its local importance in the 17th and 18th centuries.
