Porte du Besset (Case AE not numbered, joining parcels 147 and 149): entry by order of 22 November 1972
Origin and history
The Porte du Besset is a fortified gate located in the commune of Pradelles, Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It was one of the continuous fortifications erected in the early 14th century, shortly after the Hundred Years' War. Although less impressive than the main gate at La Halle, it was considered the most important after it. Today it bears witness to the medieval defensive architecture of the region.
Originally, the Besset Gate was a key element of the urban defensive enclosure of Pradelles. It opens to the south with two arches in third-point, of which the second, lower, was designed to accommodate a harrow. The inner waist, in the shape of a basket, supported a defence chamber and a watchtower. These architectural features reflect medieval fortification techniques, adapted to monitoring and protection needs.
The Besset Gate has lost its defensive apparatus over the centuries, but retains significant heritage value. It was listed as historical monuments by order of 22 November 1972, recognizing its importance in local history. Today it is owned by the town of Pradelles and remains an emblematic vestige of the medieval fortifications of the region.
The gate is located on Rue du Mazel, in the historic centre of Pradelles. Its strategic location, south of the enclosure, made it an essential checkpoint for the city. The fortifications of Pradelles, of which it is part, illustrate the efforts of urban communities to protect themselves during a period marked by conflicts, including the Hundred Years War.
