Origin and history
The door of the ancient bishopric of Dijon is an emblematic building of the city, built in the 14th century. It bears witness to the Burgundian medieval architecture and the religious importance of Dijon at that time. Located on Rue Chabot-Charny, it is today one of the few remains of the former Episcopal Palace, mostly missing.
Classified as historical monuments by order of September 10, 1937, this gate illustrates the preserved heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its official inscription underscores its heritage value and its role in the urban history of Dijon. Available sources, such as the Merimée database or Wikipedia, confirm its status and precise location.
In the 14th century, Dijon was a dynamic city under the influence of the Dukes of Burgundy, where religious institutions, like the bishopric, played a central role. The monuments of this period often reflect a dual function: symbolic (spiritual power) and defensive (protection of places of power). The door of the bishopric is in this context, although its exact uses are not detailed in current sources.
