City gate: by order of 9 November 1926

Origin and history

The Porte du Cers, located in Saint-Julia in Haute-Garonne, is a 16th-century monument. It is distinguished by its full arch topped by one floor, as well as by traces of grooves for one harrow and two spurs forming buttresses. These architectural elements suggest a defensive function, typical of the city gates of that time.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 9 November 1926, this gate is now owned by the municipality. Its state of conservation and its location (9114 Rue de la Porte de Sers) make it a notable vestige of the late medieval heritage of the region. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory (note 7/10).

At the time of its construction, city gates played a key role in protecting the villages from external threats. They also served as a point of control for trade and displacement. In the context of 16th century Occitanie, these works reflected the importance of local fortifications in an area marked by intense conflict and cultural exchanges.
