Origin and history

The Chenizelles Gate, located in Laon, is a limestone construction dating from the late twelfth or early thirteenth century. It is covered with flat tiles and equipped with a harrow, an assommoir and now missing vantals. This historic monument, classified in 1932, is characteristic of the medieval fortifications of the region.

According to the sources, this door could be one of two sponsored by Philippe Auguste. It has been connected since 1663 to Porte Saint-Jean by a round road supported by iron consoles. His name would come from the church of Saint-Michel, formerly contiguous.

The Chenizelles Gate illustrates medieval defensive architecture, with elements such as the assemblage and the harrow, designed to protect the city. Its classification in 1932 underscores its heritage importance, while its connection to the Saint John Gate shows an evolution of fortifications in the 17th century.
