Origin and history
The Ferracap Gate, located in Penne-d'Agenais, is a key element of the medieval city walls, built in the 13th century. It is distinguished by its cut stone structure, its two cross-shaped murderers, and the inner grooves intended for a harrow. The breech, on the other hand, was later rebuilt into bricks, illustrating architectural changes after its initial construction.
The door is also known as the Ricard Gate, according to a local legend that associates it with Richard Lion Heart. The latter reportedly crossed the door during a siege in Penne-d'Agenais. The porch, in broken arch, is framed by two foothills, reinforcing its defensive aspect. The door, as well as the Ricard Gate, were inscribed as a Historic Monument by order of 20 June 1950, highlighting their heritage importance.
The location of the door is specified in the Merimée base under the address 1 Porte Du Ricard, 47140 Penne-d'Agenais, in the department of Lot-et-Garonne. The monument, owned by the commune, retains tangible traces of its medieval defensive role, although some parts, such as the breche, have been modified over the centuries. The accuracy of its location is estimated as satisfactory a priori according to the available data.
