Origin and history

The gate of the Cour des Recollets, located at 30 rue des Recollets in Nevers (Burgogne-Franche-Comté), is the last vestige of a Franciscan convent founded in the 13th century. This 18th-century monument, inscribed in historical monuments in 1943, marks the location of a religious building having evolved over six centuries, from ropes to recollets, a reformed branch of order.

The order of Franciscans, or cordons, was introduced in Nevers in 1270 by Countess Yolande of Burgundy. Their original convent, destroyed by the wars, was relocated in 1363 to the château de la Gloriette thanks to Marguerite de France. In 1597, the recollets, which were reformed ropes, took possession of the site, marking a new phase for the site.

Architecturally, the portal is distinguished by its 16th century stair turret, covered by an overhanging half-timber. Although the convent disappeared, this vestige recalls the importance of begging orders in the religious and social life of Nevers, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The portal is now located in a private property at 2 rue Marguerite-Duras (formerly 40 rue de l'Oratoire).
