Origin and history

La Porte-Beffroi de Vedène is a monument located in the commune of Vedène, in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This belfry, typical of the defensive or symbolic constructions of the small medieval or post-medieval towns, bears witness to the local architectural heritage. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 9 July 1934 underlines its cultural and historical importance for the region.

In the Provençal context, belfries or fortified doors often played a central role in community life. They served as both a monitoring point, a symbol of municipal power and a gathering place. In Vedène, as in other communes in the region, these structures reflected the social organization and defensive needs of local populations, while marking the entrance of villages or urban areas.

Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the evolution of urban and rural landscapes in Provence.
