Porte de Ville known as Porte Dauphine or Porte de France. Registration by order of 28 December 1928
Origin and history
La Porte Dauphine, also known as Porte de France, is an emblematic monument to the city of Ligny-en-Barrois, located in the Meuse department, in the Grand Est region. Built during the 4th quarter of the 18th century, this city gate embodies the defensive and urban architecture of the pre-revolutionary period. It reflects the improvements made to control access to the city, reflecting the strategic and symbolic concerns of the time.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 28 December 1928, the Porte Dauphine is now the property of the commune of Ligny-en-Barrois. Its listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments highlights its heritage importance and its role in local history. Although the available sources do not specify its current use (visit, rental, etc.), its precise location at 84 Leroux Street allows it to be located in the city's historic urban fabric.
The location of the Dauphine Gate is assessed as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), indicating a reasonable knowledge of its location, without being perfectly accurate. The available data come mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, supplemented by internal information. The gate remains a notable architectural vestige, illustrating the built heritage of Lorraine under the Ancien Régime.
