Origin and history

Ricard Gate, also known as Ferracap Gate, is part of the medieval ramparts of Penne-d'Agenais. Built in the 13th century, it is distinguished by its cut stone structure, its two cross-shaped murderers, and the inner grooves intended for a harrow. The breech was later rebuilt into bricks. This monument illustrates the typical defensive architecture of the period, with a broken arch porch framed by two foothills.

According to a local legend, this door would have its name as Richard Lion's Heart, who would have crossed its walls during a siege of the city. Although this anecdote is more a matter of folklore, it shows the strategic importance of Penne-d'Agenais during the Middle Ages. The gate, classified as a Historic Monument since 1950, now belongs to the commune and remains a symbol of the fortified heritage of the region.

The protected elements include both the Ricard Gate and the Ferracap Gate, both inscribed by ministerial decree. Their preservation makes it possible to study medieval defence techniques, such as the use of harrows or murderers, as well as subsequent adaptations, such as partial brick reconstruction. The location of the gate, at the 1 Porte du Ricard, makes it a point of interest for visitors exploring the military and urban history of New Aquitaine.
