Thonon Gate (Case A 745, 819): classification by decree of 19 June 1981
Origin and history
The Thonon Gate, located in Yvoire in the Haute-Savoie department, is a 14th-century monument. It is one of the architectural remains of this medieval town, ranked among the most beautiful villages in France. His name is sometimes confused with that of the door of Rovoree, also present in the locality, but the sources clearly specify his identification as the door of Thonon.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 19 June 1981, this gate illustrates the strategic importance of Yvoire in medieval times. The commune, located on the shores of Leman, was then a place of passage and commercial control between Savoie and neighbouring regions. The building, now a mixed property (private and communal), remains a symbol of Savoyard defensive heritage.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its role in Yvoire's historic urban landscape. Although little detail is provided on its construction or subsequent alterations, its classification attests to its heritage value. The precise location, close to the Place de la Mairie, makes it a landmark in the medieval heart of the village.
