Porte de Ville dit Tonnerre : inscription by order of 28 December 1926

Origin and history

The Porte de Tonnerre, also known as the Porte de Sainte-Verote, is a massive building located north of the village of Noyers-sur-Serein, in the department of Yonne. It is distinguished by its lava roof and houses, in a niche, a Burgundy polychrome statue of the Virgin dating from the 16th century. This statue, decorated every August 15th with a bunch of grapes (green or verrot), was associated with the protection of the vines against the summer thunderstorms, which earned him the name of Sainte Vérote.

The gate was listed as historical monuments by order of 28 December 1926. Today it belongs to the commune of Noyers and is located at the approximate address of 66 Rue des Vignerons. Its architecture and symbolic function reflect the importance of viticulture in the Burgundy region, as well as popular beliefs related to crop protection.

No additional information is available on its sponsor, construction or any specific historical events that would take place there. The sources mention only its inscription as a historical monument and its precise location in the village, without details of its military or civilian use beyond its symbolic and religious role.
