Origin and history

The town gate of Confolens, classified as a Historical Monument, constituted in the Middle Ages the main access to the upper city. Built on a steep terrain, it takes the form of a square or rectangular tower, integrated with a minimal projection. Its broken and double-rolled arches, both outside and inside, as well as the vault of the porch running over a quarter-round moulding, illustrate 13th century defensive architectural techniques. No trace of a drawbridge was found, but the passage of the hers, well preserved at the entrance, attests to its protective role.

The top of the door has undergone subsequent modifications, while a window with a 15th century support, located above the city side hanger, reveals additions after its initial construction. The absence of cadastration and its status as a public domain underline its integration into the communal heritage. Inscribed by decree of 13 November 1973, this door symbolizes Confolens' medieval heritage and its urban defence system.

The location of the door, at approximately 6 Rue de l'Ancien Tribunal, corresponds to a historical area of Confolens, in the present New Aquitaine region (formerly Poitou-Charentes). Its conservation allows us to study the access control systems of fortified cities, although the accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). Available sources, such as Monumentum, confirm its heritage and architectural importance.
