Door with its vaulted passage and the façade on the street following (Box ZR 188, 190): inscription by order of 30 December 1988

Origin and history

The Porte des Butcheries de Saint-Saturnin is a vestige of the fortified enclosure of the village, built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It is located northwest of the ramparts, marking the entrance to Rue des Boucheries. Its architecture is distinguished by a low, chamfreined, broken arch, as well as the work of peedroits. To the left of the door, a slope reinforces the exterior wall, showing defensive techniques of the time.

This door gives access to a covered passage, the exit of which has a pierced facade of three openings: a shop bay, a rectangular door with mouldings, and a wooden lintel gate. These elements suggest a defensive and commercial function, typical of medieval fortified villages. The structure, including the vaulted passage and the façade, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 30 December 1988.

The work illustrates the urban organization of Saint-Saturnin, where the fortified gates rhythmized access while sheltering artisanal or commercial activities. The name "street des Butcheries" probably evokes the concentration of schoops linked to this corporation, common in medieval villages. The approximate location, noted as "passable" (5/10), places today the door close to Rue Côte Gros Jean.

No information is available on any sponsors or specific historical events related to this door. Its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments, however, underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The sources mention only descriptive and administrative data, without anecdote or detail on its construction or past uses.
