Origin and history
The fortified gate of Rillé is the only significant vestige of the medieval fortifications of the village, erected in the thirteenth century. It stands north of Rillé, in Indre-et-Loire (region Centre-Val de Loire), and marked the entrance to the historic road leading to Channay-sur-Lathan and Château-la-Vallière. Ranked a historic monument in 1935, its structure in masonry of limestone and millstones bears witness to the defensive construction techniques of the time.
Originally, Rillé was a stronghold of the Dukes of Anjou, protected by walls whose exact layout remains poorly known. The fortifications were gradually dismantled, leaving only this northern gate, intact, and traces of the southern gate, now integrated into a modern home. The door retains defensive elements such as a arched third-point track and the location of an old harrow.
Architecturally, the monument consists of a central massif flanked by two walls in return squared towards the interior of the village. The materials used — lake limestone and millstone — reflect local resources. Although owned by the municipality, its current state of conservation and accessibility are not specified in the sources. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underscores its heritage importance as a witness to medieval defensive systems in Touraine.
